Crostwick, on the River Bure, was a parish in the St Faith district of Norwich which enjoyed the open countryside of Crostwick Common. On Wednesday 10th April 1861 the 10th Hussars organised a steeplechase meeting on the Common, with the card consisting of a number of hotly contested Cups. The opening Challenge Cup was won by Mr Thacker’s Ruby, beating Budmash and Blue Ruin. Later in the day Ruby also landed the 10th Hussars Cup, while the feature Hunt Cup went to Mr P Bleakley’s Fearnought. There are no records of further meetings being staged on the Common. |
